Raised in Apr 1960 at Srinagar, BEACON is the Pioneer Project of BRO. Brig BP Wadhera, the first Chief Engineer, coined the slogan “Beacon Bole Changla”.
Work commenced on Sonamarg–Leh and Chushul roads in 1961. The Jammu – Srinagar stretch of NH-1A was taken over from PWD in 1965, and upgraded to double lane. The Project was also made responsible for the 200 Kms stretch of road Leh – Manali, between Upshi and Sarchu.
Due to increased workload, two new Projects viz. SAMPARK and HIMANK were carved out of BEACON by transferring some of its Sectors. Some of its major achievements are construction of Thoise Airfield, resurfacing of Airstrip at Rajouri and Airfields at Leh, Awantipur, Srinagar and Jammu, Centrally Heated General Hospital at Leh and rehabilitation of Jawahar Tunnel.
During “OP Vijay” Beacon once again rose to meet the challenge of opening the Zojila Pass on 07 May 99 against all odds and kept the communication line through, for the unprecedented induction of men and material. BEACON has developed 2500 Km of roads in J&K, and is presently maintaining 1584 Km of roads.
It is also upgrading 585 Km existing roads to NH double lane specifications. BEACON has earned a place for itself in history by its immense contribution to the development of the State of J&K by building a vast network of roads.
