Raised in Sep 1989 exclusively for bridging the mighty rivers in the Eastern Sector of the country and named ‘SETUK’ after the sanskrit word Setu meaning a bridge, the Project was later entrusted with other construction activities such as roads and buildings. It is involved in the development and maintenance of roads in the States of Meghalaya, Assam and Tripura. The HQ of the Project is located at Shillong, the picturesque capital of Meghalaya.
National Highway-44 which is the lifeline of the states of Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur, South Assam and South Meghalaya is being kept open for vehicular traffic throughout the year, by the Project, despite the difficult hilly terrain, incessant rainfall and problem of insurgency.
Construction of roads and fencing along the Indo Bangladesh border is an important task being carried out by the Project. National Highway-51 connecting Karimganj to Sutarkandi and Raghna Bazar maintained by the Project, is a key trade route between India and Bangladesh. National Highway -44A from Manu in Tripura to Sairang in Mizoram is yet another important road links under SETUK |
