After nationalization of coal fields in Bihar (Now Jharkand State) Project Hirak was raised during 15 Feb 1980 for speedy construction of link roads in coal Field area of Dhanbad in the jurisdiction of Bharat Cooking Coal Limited. The area in those dates was dominated by coal mafias and State PWD was ineffective. Initially HQ Project was sanctioned as a Special Task force Commanded by Chief Engineer vide Govt India , BRDB , letter No F114(13/64- Pers/23603/DGBR/E2A(Esstt) of 15 Feb 1980.
Hirak was authorized with full strength of to Project wef 01 Apr 1995 and was functioning with three Task Forces under command. However, wef 01 Apr 1998, authorization of staff reduced to Special Task Force strength vide HQ DGBR letter No 17812/DGBR/E2 A (Estt) dated 16 Mar 1998. STF Hirak moved to Nagpur in Apr 1998 to facilitate the socio–economic development of Naxal infested areas for construction of roads and bridges in Gadchiroli and Bhandara Districts of Maharashtra. Development of NH-16 (Nizamabad to Jagadalpur) passing through Naxaliate prone area in the States of Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh (291 Kms) was entrusted to Project Hirak by MOSRT&H during Feb’1998.
Further STF Hirak moved from Nagpur (Maharashtra) to Champawat vide HQ DGBR letter No. 12218/Move/DGBR/62/EG2 dated 21 Feb 2011 and took over the entire sector of 761 BRTF/Project Shivalik wef 21 Apr 2011. Consequent upon move of 50BRTF from Vijyapur to Champawat, STF Hirak moved from Champawat to Tanakpur on 11 Nov 2012. In Last 33 years the project Hirak has executed Air field works, Bridge Works, Building Works, GS/CSG Roads/MHA Roads/Deposit/NH works in Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra ,Orissa, Tamil Nadu ,Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal States and Andaman &Nicobar Islands( UT). The Project has executed following prestigious works:-
(a) BCCL work were completed in Jul1997 for Rs 28.98Crores
(b) Arakonam Airfield was completed in 1996 for Rs 17.05 Crores
(c) Varanasi – Ramnagar – Mughalsarai Bypass was completed in 1999 for Rs 54.30 Crores
(d) Damaku-Nimmala-Padu Road in Andhra Pradesh was completed in 1998 for Rs 17.14Crores
(e) Maharashtra deposit works completed up to 31 Mar 2012 for 145.50 crores.
(f) NH-16 ( Nizamabad to Jagadalpur) completed works up to 31 Mar 2012 for 489.40 Crores
