Raised in May 1961 primarily for construction of Hindustan-Tibet Road, the Project is looking after a road length of about 1863 Km, 182 Km long Ditch Cum Bund & the strategic roads from Indo-Nepal Border in the East to the Indo-Pak Border in the West, in the states of Uttaranchal, Himachal and Punjab.
DEEPAK played an important role in 'OP Vijay' by clearing the Manali- Sarchu Road ahead of schedule and keeping it open to unprecedented vehicular traffic. The project took active part in 'OP White Horse' for relief operations at Malpa. It contributed significantly in the earthquake relief measures in Uttarkashi-Gangotri-Nelong belt of Garhwal region.
Besides construction/improvement of roads, the project has constructed 20 Nos 1076 Mtrs length of permanent bridges up to 31 Mar 2001. One of the most arduous and challenging job before the Project is annual snow clearance to remove huge accumulation of frozen ice through a road stretch of over 600 Kms. Project DEEPAK is a boon to the pilgrims visiting Badrinath and Hemkund Sahib.
'The Glowing Lamp' DEEPAK is very popular among the local population and State Governments for its dedicated service to nation building for over four decades. The Project marches ahead inspired by the motto “Sada Age-Sabse Age”.
