Project Shivalik was raised on 25 Feb 2009 at IDPL Complex Rishikesh, Uttarakhand to expedite development of road infrastructure in the State of Uttarakhand, under GS Projection, MHA and MORT&H. The project is developing and maintaining 346.24 Kms of GS Road, 647.80 Kms of National Highways, 37.45 Km of MHA Roads and 16.21 Kms of Deposit Works. The Project has two Task Forces, 21 BRTF and 36 BRTF, looking after Joshimath and Harsil Sectors respectively. The project has the unique distinction and honour of looking after the National Highways leading to the ‘Char Dham’ namely Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri. This project has adopted the slogan “Jai Badri Vishal”.

Due to cloud burst on 03/04 Aug 2012 in Uttarkashi District, extensive damages to road and bridges had occurred which disrupted line of communication on Dharasu-Gangotri (NH-108) thereby bringing yatra to Gangotri at a complete halt. A large number of devotees were stranded due to this natural calamity. 

 

A havoc created by furry of nature resulted in District of Uttarkashi being completely cut off from Uttarakhand State. Massive destruction took place in Uttarkashi District in terms of loss of precious human lives and properties in this disaster. 

 

Restoration works had been taken up at war footings by Project Shivalik and units under command to restore the line of communication by launching two Nos Bailey bridges of 190 ft DDRBB and 100 ft TSBB.  During the operation Capt A Rahul Ramesh laid down his life during launching of Swarigad Bailey Bridge and a few of GREF personnel sustained injuries. Still the spirits of troops were kept high and restoration works were undertaken up in a time bound manner. 

 

On 13 Sep 2012, again due to sudden cloud burst in Ukhimath in Rudraprayag District, massive destruction took place causing loss of human lives & property and disruption of road network in the region. Besides damages to PWD road, NH-109 Rudraprayag-Gaurikund (New NH-107) under AOR of Project Shivalik got severely damaged at 14 locations between km 32.00 to 51.00. Dozer, JCB and GREF Pers/CPLs were deployed round the clock to clear the slides and restore the movement of traffic. Road Rudraprayag-Gaurikund was made trafficable on 15 Sep 2012.

 

On 26 Jan 2013 Capt A Rahul Ramesh of 171 FCPL/72 RCC/36 BRTF has been awarded 'Shourya Chakra' (Posthumous).
